The United States, who had struggled to put together quality soccer and maximum effort, earned a stunning 2-0 victory. A world-class goal by Jozy Altidore and all-universe goalkeeping by Tim Howard gave the Americans their best victory since defeating Portugal, 3-2, in the first game of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea.
